GDS International was founded more than a decade back and today takes name as one among the fastest growing media companies in the world. The brainchild of Spencer Green, GDS, and the company has always strived to keep its employees happy and the numerous testimonials of the staff at the company are enough proof to this fact.

Ollie Stobbings, 27 who has already spent a few years at GDS International has a similar story to narrate. A firm believer of first impressions, Ollie says she was swept off her feet right when she walked into the GDS office. Sensing fantastic opportunities within a strong sales atmosphere, she felt that it was the right time to venture into a field she knew she would like. And today years down the lane, Ollie is happy that she took this decision.

To put it in her words “I always wanted to work for a company who valued hard work and recognised potential, where the working day was enjoyable and employees were rewarded for outstanding achievement. This is what GDS offers every one of its staff.

I joined GDS International in October 2006 and it’s been an unbelievable journey. I was put on a newly recognised project, headed up by my Sales Director, and it was obvious that this was more than ‘another sales job’: you need to be driven, hungry, enthusiastic, and passionate, motivated, and want to succeed at every level. ”

Ollie also adds that opportunities at the company are never-ending and that the company offers a perfect atmosphere for any individual to achieve success in a short period of time.

Within ten months, I was offered my first management role – as Sub-Manager on GDS International’ flagship product for Europe, and ‘Product of the Year’ 2007. Within 14 months I was promoted to Manager and I now look after a sales team that are as determined to succeed and further their careers as I am”, she adds.

Talk to any employee who has worked at GDS International and you will find them voice the same opinion about a career with GDS. ‘Satisfying’, ‘a great work atmosphere’, ‘fantastic opportunities’, ‘rewarding career’ et cetera are a few of the common things that almost all employees speak of.

Founded by Spencer Green, GDS International is among the top events and publishing companies across the globe today and thanks to its reputation attracts top talents at universities who dream of starting their career with the company.

Alex Sobol, 24, was one such ambitious graduate who had high hopes for a great career. Having done his graduation at The University of Delaware, Alex began a career with GDS on June 4th, 2007 and today he feels that he could not have scripted his life any better.

Alex had always wanted to work in an energetic work environment that appreciates hard-work and dedication and today he is more than glad that he found GDS.

“When I came in for my interview with GDS in March of 2007, I was really taken back by the atmosphere in the office. Every single person I was introduced too – every project I was informed about – topped off with a very specific game plan during my interview, all made working for GDS an easy decision.”

Alex was made part of one of the most progressive and ambitious projects of the company which was headed by the office’s top sales manager. Today, as his anniversary with the company approaches, Alex has this to say “As my one-year anniversary with the company approaches, I have enjoyed the opportunity of managing my first industry focused strategy summit for GDS. This experience has been absolutely amazing. I now have the privilege of managing and directing new members of the company, which has been very rewarding. I believe that my success so far with GDS is for many reasons. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the most seasoned sales professionals in the world. I have met some of the most well-known industry executives on the continental United States, and I’m in a situation where there is always room to grow. I never imagined I’d enjoy my first job out of school this much.”

GDS International is one company which is known to offer the best working atmosphere for its employees. The company is one that sees to it that employees who work with it are satisfied with the working conditions, the pay and the way they are treated. And hence it is no wonder that the company is one of the most sought-after ones by top talents who have passed out of college.

Says Anna Ashby, 25 “Coming out of university, I had clear goals: wipe out my debts and begin a career by the time I was 25. I have always been an ambitious person but, realistically, at 23 I knew it was a tall order. Then I came across GDS.

I had never worked in sales, but the advert said ‘no experience necessary’, and the lure of exceptional commission, promotional opportunities and the possibility to travel abroad led me to apply.

Thankfully, I got the job. I started on March 5th 2007 on a relatively new project for GDS – a luxury lifestyle title: 100Thousand Club.” Anna who is working in the publishing division of GDS International added “I was delighted to be working on a publication that I was interested in and excited to develop. This challenge made me more determined to succeed and to meet my personal targets.”

GDS International is also known for offering their employees enough support and training all throughout their career. “The great thing about GDS is that the support and training does not end after the first week. Continuous sessions on personal development and guidance on cultivating sales techniques from the very best in the company reach across the Atlantic! And the company is extremely generous with its incentives to keep staff motivated, which range from cash prizes to exclusive five-star, all-inclusive holidays! I’m glad that GDS has afforded me such a wonderful opportunity to grow professionally and personally”, Adds Anna.

Anna who has been working with the company since she passed out of university has been promoted twice to full manager running a team of six in the past 14 months.

Spencer Green GDS International believes, like any other successful businessman, that success is all about finding the ‘silver linings’.Yes, every cloud has a silver lining; so it’s not in fearing the cloud looming large overhead but in finding the silver lining that the key to success lies. The current economic climate, which is far from encouraging, is no doubt a cloud, a dark, threatening kind of cloud, but the fact that it’s raining talents all around is the silver lining in this case.

Here’s what Spencer Green himself says, “I believe that for many of us economic austerity will last for years, and the difficult times have just started. But when you’re chewing on life’s gristle, as Monty Python taught us, don’t worry. Give a whistle. In difficult times, companies get the pick of talented individuals; people that are hungry to get the right position and make it stick. That sounds like opportunity to me”. How GDS International benefits out of picking the right people and how the company makes use of its HR team has all been discussed in detail in an earlier post ‘Spencer Green GDS International concentrates on picking the right person’. So there’s no point in bringing it up once again. The point to be noted is this- just as it works out for Spencer Green GDS, it would all work out for you too; you just need to find the silver lining when the darkest of clouds loom threateningly upon you.

GDS International offers a great exposure to those with right attitude; a thinking mind full of ideas can go a long way in the company.

Spencer has this to say, “Bright, motivated people in a room can get a lot done – especially when they start thinking around the root cause of a problem, instead of just trying to solve it as stated. What if we kept the best of GDS’ culture, the desire to provide people with careers by training them and promoting them through the company, and added to it with the very best people from outside – at a more senior level? What if we started headhunting?”

Human Resources Management of Spencer Green GDS International inspires many to follow Spencer Green’s vision of using bright people to think out-of-the-box to solve problems. If you are lucky to get the right balance of experience within GDS, then you will have the right set of skills to carry on in impressive growth trajectory. It is also true that there are always opportunities flooding in when you are providing outstanding customer service.

Spencer Green, GDS International has been in the limelight for his innovative approach and enlightened attitude towards tackling the business environment. He takes live examples and thinks on how to use it practically in his life as an entrepreneur. One of the qualities of a good entrepreneur lies in imparting knowledge to enrich the workforce with ideas encouraging them to keep going.

Spencer Green got an opportunity to read “We Were Young and Carefree”, the autobiography of two-time Tours de France winner, Laurent Fignon. Fignon is most widely remembered for losing the 1989 Tours by eight seconds, the narrowest margin for defeat in the competition’s history. He cycled 3,285.3 kilometres at an average 52 km/hr and lost by eight seconds. 8! It crucified him for the rest of his life.

The book has inspired him to keep going and Spencer Green GDS comment goes like this – “A stark reminder that failure – even noble failure – hurts.”

GDS International has Spencer Green at its helm to take it to heights of excellence.

Spencer Green at GDS International takes an optimistic approach to solve problems that rise on a daily pace. He says, “Our summit and conference products are generating great buzz, we have some cracking onsite customer deal stories to share, and a skilled, experienced management team. We have opportunities to grow… but we need the staff resources to do it.”

“What to do? We convened an HR meeting and flew in the directors from all offices, together with our CEO and other senior management. The challenge was: how to quickly progress the next generation: to take people from training to effective sales professionals effectively and fast?”

Spencer Green GDS

The answer is to collate the ideas of human resources available. Spencer Green GDS states, “Bright, motivated people in a room can get a lot done – especially when they start thinking around the root cause of a problem, instead of just trying to solve it as stated. I believe that bringing in new, experienced staff will actually help current staff because it makes the company stronger, and that provides growth and new options.

What makes GDS International the top class seller? Spencer Green GDS explains the secrets behind powerful selling.

As Spencer Green states, “The goal is to build rapport in your opening so the client lowers their guard and listens. This is the greatest challenge in sales. You have to be intelligent and understand that, while you are involved in a directed conversation, it is still a conversation”.

“Do your research. Know their needs. Align yourself with those needs, sit beside them, build intelligent rapport and empathy, and then move the call forward. When a potential client is comfortable that your agenda and their agenda are aligned – that both parties will benefit – then discuss your product. And if your agendas are aligned, and both parties will benefit, then any client who hasn’t got their guard up will really like”.

As far as business practices for GDS International is concerned this is intelligent selling. “It may seem easier to control your agenda sat opposite the client, and it is more difficult to have control when you’re sat alongside them, but that control is real, because it’s mutually beneficial, which makes it a lot more powerful”.
